Skyride

Today my friends, husband and I took part in the Skyride in Hull and it was the most beautiful day.  Skyride is a national campaign from Sky and British Cycling created to inspire everyone whatever their age or ability to get on their bikes. This includes an aim to get 1 million people cycling regularly by 2013.

Skyride closed off the streets to motorists between 10am - 4pm so cyclists could cycle freely around the city centre.  It was a great way to spend a sunny Sunday with friends, explore the city centre of Hull including such places as The Deep,  shared with a few drinks at the end of the day at Fruit and Pave :-)

My friend Matt riding on his friends custom long wheel base low rider.

I think the overall message from the day was, get on your bike, its free and good for you :-)

My sister, her husband and their 2 year old daughter also did this yesterday - they enjoyed it so much, they did the route twice! If my bike was in any decent state, I may have even ventured into town myself! Nice to see some pics of the day, too! It's a great idea.

Hello Aitch :-) It was a great day, I did the route three times! I am hoping they organise it again next year. x

This looks like so much fun, I think a similar thing happens in Bristol each year. They shut all the roads for a day and have a massive cycle.I used to commute to work by bike (a 12 mile route) and was really confident. Now I'm really scared as I had a year gap with cycling and the roads now terrify me! So silly, I may try a cycle to town later.. :-/

Hi Rebekah :-)

I know exactly what you mean about being scared of the roads, I used cycle to work everyday through rain or shine but now I only cycle to work maybe once or twice a week when the sun is out. The route I take is mainly off the road and is only about 4 miles in total.

I need to buy a helmet.

what a great idea...that low rider is quite something!

Hello Notmassedproduced :-) The low rider is cool isn't it, turning it around and going up hills was difficult though. Not for long journeys I reckon.

We did the Hull Skyride too - twice. We loved it so much that we're going on the Humber Bridge one next sunday. I used to cycle everywhere but not so much these days on the busy roads. However, I did brave Spring Bank and cycled home after the ride and was surprised at how well I managed it. It was sunday afternoon though and not rush hour on a weekday.

It was a lovely fun thing to do and everyone was so friendly, chatty and cheerful. I loved it!
Lovely blog, btw :-)

Hello Diane, Nice to meet another person from my neighbourhood :-) The Skye Ride was fantastic wasn't it, I agree that everyone was really friendly, chatty and cheerful. The sunny weather had a big part to play I think :-)

I cannot believe you braved Spring Bank, I consider that to be one of the worst cycle routes in Hull. I think the Council could do to improve the cycle routes in Hull, considering 5,500 took part in the Skye ride that day it shows how many people are interested in cycling.

Thanks for stopping by, I will have a peek at your blog too :-)
